Policy Focus

Andrew broadly supports the Green Party’s fully costed platform and believes it offers a brighter future for all Canadians.

Of the Green policies put forward, he is laser-focused on the following three:

Electoral Reform

Proportional Representation for Meaningful Change

Economic Justice

Basic Income, Fair Taxation, and Affordable Housing

Youth Opportunities

Free Tuition, Green Jobs, Brighter Future

Electoral Reform

People tune out to politics, thinking their voices don’t matter. Without Electoral Reform, they’re right. Look at last year’s Provincial election. Doug Ford won 64% of the seats with 43% of a 45.5% voter turnout. That’s a strong “majority” for only 20% support from all eligible voters. Make it make sense.

Our current “winner-take-all” voting system is outdated and unfair. It discounts millions of votes and forces us to compromise by “voting strategically.”

It distorts results, discourages participation, and leaves us polarized against one another.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Problem

The Green Party stands firmly for Electoral Reform as a gateway policy to enact real, meaningful change. Andrew directly supports the following policy actions:

  • Adopt voting with proportional representation – let every voice count

  • Let the youth have their say – lower the voting age to age 16

  • Restore the per-vote subsidy – let small parties compete fairly with legacy parties

Policy

In 2015, I voted for the Liberal Party of Canada on the promise of Electoral Reform. The Liberals abandoned that promise, and I abandoned the Liberals.

Electoral Reform is the gateway to all meaningful political change in this country. Without it, we remain hostage to the partisan Left—Right theatrics of the legacy parties.

Canadians deserve better. They deserve proportional representation.

Point

Economic Justice

Across Canada, people are running out of money. The cost of living has skyrocketed, and hard work simply doesn’t pay off in the way that it did for previous generations.

In 2024, the federal government provided over $29,000,000,000 in subsidies to already-profitable oil and gas companies. Imagine if we used that money to provide each Canadian with a basic income of $10,000 per year. Imagine the difference that money could make.

In Canada, widespread poverty, stagnant wages, and sky-high rents are by design. Why should we continue to support legacy parties who abandon their constituents?

It’s time to stop rewarding career politicians and the corporate elites who fund them. Let’s choose to subsidize ourselves for a change!

As Canadians, we deserve our fair share.

Problem

The Green Party believes in building a fair economy where prosperity is shared, and every Canadian can live with dignity. Andrew supports the following policy actions:

  • A Guaranteed Livable Income to meet basic needs for all Canadians.

  • Fair Taxation and a higher basic personal amount – don’t pay on your first $40k.

  • Close tax loopholes so corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share.

  • Affordable housing investments and restricted corporate homeownership.

I’ve lived in the same purpose-built, rent-controlled apartment for over ten years. I was spending over 80% of my net income on rent in the first few years. Without rent control, we could not afford to be part of the Grange Park community.

A basic income and fair taxation would improve the lives of millions of Canadians. Why continue to subsidize the fossil fuel industry when we can use the same money to pay ourselves a living wage?

Point

Youth Opportunities

Young people face a world of uncertainty. Costs are rising, opportunity feels out of reach, and social contracts are broken.

Canadian youth deserve better. Education free from crippling student debt. Pathways to sustained employment. Most importantly, they deserve the Canadian dream; the hope and promise of a brighter future.

Canada has the money to make this happen. Building “Canada Strong” means building a future in which young people can once again trust in the promise of this country.

Building “Canada Strong” means building a future in which young people can once again trust in the promise of this country.

Problem

The Green Party is, by definition, a future-focused party. To improve youth opportunities, Andrew supports the following policy actions:

  • Free post-secondary tuition to break down financial barriers to education

  • Create green jobs and training programs to incentivize decarbonization, expanding renewable energy, developing climate technology, and building sustainable infrastructure

  • Expand apprenticeships and skilled-trades training to create pathways beyond university

  • Invest in youth employment programs that prepare young Canadians for the decarbonized economy of the future

Policy

In a decade or so, my child will graduate from high school. By 2040, they’ll be entering the workforce. What will their world look like? What choices will they be faced with?

I try to keep this in mind when making decisions. Despite the mess we’ve inherited from legacy parties and older generations, we must remain hopeful and look to the future.

The alternative is not an option. It’s simply too late to be a pessimist.

About Andrew

Andrew is a renter and long-time resident of Toronto’s Grange Park neighbourhood. He works in engineering as a technical writer on public rail infrastructure projects.

Andrew believes in a more straightforward and accessible kind of politics. He supports the Green Party because he wants to see more action on core issues that will shape Canada’s future. He is fed up with the Left—Right squabbling of the legacy parties and would rather focus on forward-thinking solutions to the problems that keep Canadians up at night.
